PROBLEMS STATEMENT
Greater Masaka is situated in the central part of Uganda. It has a population of about 251,600 and the main ethnic languages spoken here are Luganda and Lunyankole. Participatory livelihood analysis here revealed that, crop cultivation is only the main form of economic engagement for local communities.

It is located on the fringes of the Lake Victoria to the East. Fishing and Farming are some of the dominant activities here. HIV is the leading cause of adult death in Greater Masaka. Its effects on mortality are particularly marked in the most economically active sectors like fishing. However, the overall crude birth rate in the district (45.7 per 1000 population) remains higher than the crude death rate (28.1 per 1000 population), resulting in continued rapid population growth. This has created a big destitute population of orphans, vulnerables and widows.

Poverty has stricken the area due to un-employment, poor yields, poor methods of farming and unreliable weather, government not implementing its plans early enough, illiteracy, poor or insuffient agricultural products market, diseases (human, animals and crop diseases).

PURPOSE:
To empower the needy(vulnerable, orphans) people through engaging them in Bee keeping for daily income generation and poverty alleviation in home steads.

OBJECTIVES:
To have trained 500 members of Gareden Of Honor Justice Mission For Children as community trainers of trainees on Bee keeping, trapping methods and management by September 2016.

PROJECT ABSTRACT:
After the aforementioned needs assessment, the following projects were proposed; piggery, poultry incubation, goat project, fruit growing, and it was very well accepted that Bee keeping is the one to bring quick and wide spread impact because of its advantage over the environment.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES AND PARTICIPANTS:
The project direct beneficiaries will be over 1,000 needy children, vulnerable, orphans of Garden Of Honor Justice Mission For Children(GHJMC), in Greater Masaka.
Members trained as TOT’s in bee keeping and management (trapping methods, disease control, feeding and honey inspection) and then also the GHJMC (approximately 2000 rural children) of Greater Masaka to receive Bee hives and on-site trainings on the above techniques.

The community households will also benefit indirectly by adopting the new knowledge of keeping bees for income generation and poverty reduction in home steads.

The project beneficiaries participated on the designing and planning of this project in it’s initial stage of participatory rural appraisal where three tool kits were used thus; F.G.D-focus group discussion, seasonality and wealth ranking (WR) tool kits which reflected the future of these beneficiaries that after completion, the beneficiaries will have been empowered and be in position to be the main producers of honey in the district and the region atlarge.

PROJECT FEASIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY:
The 20 group members where by each group contains 100 members are determined and have the will to be trained and transfer the knowledge and skills.

The executive committee members are trained on management and have the ability to execute their duties.

There is high and enough market for honey and supported by the government of Uganda under the plan for modernization of agriculture (PMA).

The area has a conducive environment for bees to live and quite rich in water and trees for nectar collection.

Financial Sustainability
After the external funding expires, the project will continue funding its activities through selling of honey.

From the income locally generated, the project will be able to facilitate the implementation and purchase of one computer used for project’s record keeping, make up of honey and candle wax processing plant and a motor vehicle pick- up that will work for finished products distribution.
